Calsidiu, Connor, Elzbeth, a recently revealed Gwen, and Kai traveled to Meiyerditch in two boats to simultaneously investigate the strange disappearances as well as get their first refugee to the Burgh. However, things starting going off the tracks when a vyre alley-sweep caused everyone to regroup at their secondary location: Azzada's base. The refugee, Altyn, revealed that only the most fit are being abducted and the vyrewatch are not happy about it. Azzada let it slip that the Boys were sent to Sector Six to check on the forge the day before, and have yet to return. Cal split up his forces, Kai and Gwen would go check on the boys while Elzbeth and Connor pursued rumors of the kidnappings.
Elzbeth and Connor were able to piece together some rumors, but were set upon by vyrewatch. It was not long later that the resident Overwatch scolded the vyres for harassing the "Freedmen" and took them away for punishment in Darkmeyer.
Gwen and Kai did not have as easy a time. After being ridiculed by a squadron of Vyrewatch, they were able to find the bunkhouse the Boys had holed up in. While Gwen investigated outside, Kai was approached by a child named Nessie. After a tense conversation, Nessie disable Kai's wrist and revealed herself to be none other than Vanescula Drakan, the current regent of Morytania. She gave the duo a message to Calsidiu: stop the kidnappings or the remnants of the Myreque die.
After recovering from the disorientation from such a visit, Gwen and Kai were able to follow the scent trail of the Boys. It led them to a man in a grey trench-coat and large-brimmed hat who wielded a powerful and terrible weapon: a revolver. The man was able to pass one of the Boys through a portal he opened before the two attacked him. The ensuing scuffle ended with Kai, Barry, and the kidnapper through the portal as it closed.
Gwen rushed through the city using her werewolf speed to deliver the bad news to Calsidiu herself.
